Devgad vs Ratnagiri Alphonso: What's the Real Difference?

Both Ratnagiri and Devgad are coastal Konkan districts and both produce Alphonso mangoes with GI certification. So what's actually different? This is a question serious mango lovers argue about every season.
Geography and Soil
Ratnagiri is approximately 120km south of Devgad. Both sit on the Konkan coast but have subtle differences in soil composition and rainfall patterns. Ratnagiri's laterite soil tends to have a higher iron content; Devgad's soil is slightly more clay-heavy in some orchards.
Taste Difference
Both are excellent. Ratnagiri Alphonso is generally considered to have a more intense floral aroma and a slightly higher Brix reading (22–26° vs 20–24° for Devgad). Devgad Alphonso tends to be slightly larger and has a marginally less intense but still exceptional flavour profile.
Which is More Authentic?
Both are genuine GI-certified Alphonso. The debate is largely regional loyalty — Konkan residents will argue for their own taluka. For most buyers, the difference between a good Ratnagiri and a good Devgad Alphonso is less significant than the difference between either of them and a non-GI, carbide-ripened alternative.
