What is GI Certification? Why Ratnagiri Alphonso Has It and Why It Matters

When you see 'GI Certified Ratnagiri Alphonso' on a box of mangoes, it means more than a label. It is a legally enforceable guarantee that this fruit was grown in a specific place, using specific traditional methods, meeting specific quality thresholds.
What is a Geographical Indication (GI)?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is an intellectual property right granted to products that have a specific geographic origin and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics attributable to that origin. The concept is governed by the TRIPS Agreement under the WTO. In India, GI tags are registered and protected under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, administered by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.
Ratnagiri Alphonso GI: Application No. 33
The Ratnagiri Alphonso mango holds GI Application Number 33 — one of the earliest GI registrations in India. This means only mangoes grown in the approved geographic areas of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Thane, and Palghar districts of Maharashtra can legally be labeled and sold as 'Ratnagiri Alphonso' or 'Hapus'.
Why the Soil Matters
The red laterite soil of Ratnagiri's Konkan coast has a unique mineral composition — high in iron and low in calcium — that directly influences the sugar composition, aroma compounds, and acidity of the Alphonso fruit. The coastal microclimate (sea breeze, controlled temperature variation between day and night, precise monsoon rainfall) further differentiates the fruit from Alphonsos grown in non-GI regions.
Why GI Certification Matters When Buying
Without GI verification, 'Alphonso' is just a name. Mangoes from Devgad, Valsad, or even Gujarat are often sold as 'Alphonso' at similar prices but taste markedly different. True Ratnagiri Hapus has a Brix level of 22–26°, a specific aromatic compound profile dominated by a molecule called linalool, and a fibre-free texture impossible to replicate outside the region.
